Large Joint Injections

Abstract

Pain originating from the musculoskeletal system is one of the major causes worldwide of disability. Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disorder in the United States and the leading cause of disability in the elderly. Conventionally, joint injections have been performed with landmark or fluoroscopy guidance. With emerging popularity of the application of ultrasound in pain medicine, joint injections under ultrasound guidance have become more popular and well established. The anatomy and sonoanatomy relevant to injections of shoulder, hip, and knee joint are described in this chapter, as well as the practical aspects.
