Abstract

Examines how electronic learning techniques can offer numerous opportunities for informal workplace learning. These include: receiving help and advice from colleagues via email or instant messaging; sharing good practice or problems through discussion lists, bulletin boards, chat and conference facilities; use of online instruction manuals; and coaching or mentoring by experienced colleagues. Points out however that most users will require some initial training in the use of these various techniques if they are to be effective, information workers have an opportunity here to assist their colleagues. Notes also various courses available in the UK.
