Abstract

The author reflects on the capability of biotechnological companies to enable ethanol biofuels to achieve sustainability in the U.S. He stresses out that political, economic, and scientific problems challenge the viability of corn-based ethanol as a major alternative to gasoline compared to cane-based ethanol which has long been accepted and produced in Brazil. Controversial issues in biofuel development is also discussed.
