Remote sensing is the operation of sensing remote pictures of the Earth. Geographical information system (GIS) is a system through which geographical informations can be retrieved. Hydrologic science now uses both the techniques in various methodologies to reduce the amount of field work and problems regarding data scarcity. From catchment delineation to identification of hydrologically similar units, GIS and remote sensing are used very frequently and with greater accuracy. The present note gives a simple, introductory overview of both the techniques along with their application methodology for water science, especially in river hydrology. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.
