The present long-term tissue culture programme aims at directing double haploid (DH) production of triticale towards responsive genotypes and at the same time allowing the practical use of anther culture in current breeding programmes. It is hoped that this can be achieved without limiting plant breeders to a few selected crosses. The goal of this investigation was to apply wheat methods to triticale, thus suggesting a strategy for large-scale DH production based on a screening procedure of parental lines and directing DH production of triticale towards predicted responsive F1 and F2s. Furthermore, the tissue culture programmes were rationalized in order to make this procedure cost effective.
