Abstract

A number of dental materials are used only for short term contact with the patient, such as temporary filling materials, impression materials, periodontal dressings and suture materials. Nevertheless, adverse patient reactions have been described after contact with such materials. In this chapter, information on the composition and release of substances from these materials is provided as the basis for a detailed review of local and systemic toxicity. Emphasis is placed on local irritative effects, but also on allergic reactions towards these materials. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
