Current political science hypothesizes that new internal and external challenges will lead to changes in the political order of the nation state, The criteria for the existence of such a transformation are broad-based and important shirts of the level and variance of state activity. In this article these hypotheses are tested with regard to the financial autonomy of the nation state on a sample of 43 countries between 1973 and 1998. It concludes that there is little evidence for a loss of financial autonomy since the level and distribution of public revenue hardly changed. An important change, however, is that since the mid-1980s the persistent cross-sectional variance of public revenue cannot be explained anymore by the famous compensation hypothesis.
