Jaundice in Malaria

Abstract

Malaria is a leading cause of death and morbidity in the world. Malaria is caused by the infection of humans by the Plasmodium species of protozoan parasites. Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, and Plasmodium malariae represent the parasites which produce malaria. P. falciparum is the protozoan which produces the most severe cases of malaria, whereas the other three produce a more mild form of malaria. Historically, malaria was described by early writers in China and India, and Hippocrates described clinical features of malaria in the fifth century BC.
