Abstract

Use of compressed air working atmosphere to prevent excessive groundwater ingress into tunnels under construction, offers many practical advantages but also has important potential drawbacks, chiefly associated with safety. This article discusses the subject in terms of tunneling shields, air locks, compressed air regulations, compressed air shields, compressors, applications, and other related subjects.
