This will be a very personal account of the first half, the Harvard half, of my scientific career, with particular attention to certain conscious decisions that I made concerning its direction and several fortunate circumstances beyond my control that were equally important in determining my choices. To me, the crossroads of discovery are more interesting than the smooth, well-planned paths of systematic collecting of data or perfecting of a new technique.
