Abstract

Congenital lumbosacral lipomas are the most common form of closed neural tube defects. In most cases they are diagnosed prenatally or at birth. They may lead to progressive neurological and urinary deterioration. However, their natural history is poorly understood. Prophylactic surgery has been the gold standard of treatment, but considering the deterioration of prophylactic detethering over time, especially in case of lipoma of the conus, the performance of prophylactic surgery in children has been questioned. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Italia.
