Abstract

According to numerous studies, arterial hypertension (AH) is the most common chronic disease, which affects about 30% of adults worldwide. The linear relationship between the level of blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular events, often with irreversible consequences, is repeatedly observed. Currently, specialists pay a lot of attention to resistant hypertension because of the increase of its proportion up to 20% of all hypertension cases and more frequent and rapid development of such complications as acute cerebrovascular pathology, myocardial infarction, heart failure, chronic kidney diseases. The review article provides information on the prevalence of resistant hypertension, the main causes of resistance, cardiovascular risks and complications in case of resistant hypertension. It also presents the results of the STEPS 2016 study, reflecting the data from the year 2017 (prevalence of risk factors of non-infectious diseases in the Republic of Belarus) and the provisions of the American Heart Association and European Society of Cardiology regarding resistant hypertension.
