Abstract

Diffuse alveolar haemorrhage (DAH) is an uncommon but serious and often life-threatening complication of a variety of diseases. Most cases of DAH are caused by capillaritis associated with systemic vasculitides such as anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies-associated vasculitis, anti-glomerular basement membrane disease, and systemic lupus erythematosus. Other causes include coagulation disorders, inhaled toxins and infections. It is important for physicians to recognize DAH early because prompt initiation of therapy and supportive measures such as oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation are crucial for survival.
