The primary goal of a scene investigation is to identify, protect, document, and collect potential evidence that may provide information regarding the circumstances of the death. The scene investigation can provide valuable information regarding the identity of the deceased, postmortem interval, cause of death, manner of death, and may provide information about persons who may have contributed to the death. This chapter reviews basic scene investigation procedures as well as their application in child death investigations.
