Additions to the deep‐sea fishes of New Zealand

Abstract

Photographs, drawings, and amplified descriptions of 11 species in 7 families of deep‐sea fish, 8 not previously recorded from the New Zealand region (24°‐57° 30'S, 157° E‐167° W) are presented. The families and species are: (Bathylagidae) Bathylagus antarcticus Guenther, 1878; (Bathypteroidae) Bathypterois longifilis Guenther, 1878; (Myctophidae) Lampanyctus guentheri Goode and Bean, 1895; (Macruridae) Bathygadus cottoides Guenther, 1878, B. longifilis Goode and Bean, 1885; (Moridae) Tripterophycis gilchristi Boulenger, 1904, Melanonus gracilis Guenther, 1878, Euchlichthys polynemus, McCullough, 1926; (Callionymidae) Callionymus phasis Guenther, 1880; (Ophidiidae) Cataetyx messierei (Guenther, 1878); (Zoarcidae) Snyderidia canina Gilbert, 1905. Of these, Bathypterois longifilis, Bathygadus cottoides, and Tripterophycis gilchristi have been recorded from the New Zealand region previously. © 1972 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
