The author discusses both the external and internal contingencies of the contemporary artist's creative situation. He argues that the role of the contemporary artist is to wage war against the dizzying crush of information and data of the digital world. He suggests that the natural minimalism of black-and-white works of art, such as line drawings, have the power to attack outward contingencies and counter mere accumulations of data.
