This paper discusses common elements of the experience of large developing countries with industrialization, drawing on the World Bank's research project on "The Sources of Industrial Growth and Structural Change." The paper, which was presented to a conference of the Chinese Academy of Science, is designed to provide a comparative framework for assessing the performance of the Chinese economy. It shows that, despite its unique features,China shares many characteristics with other large semiindustrial countries. Some implications for trade policy and future growth are noted.
