Interweaving memory, informal educational spaces and identity, analysis of the educational dimension of the Maré Museum in Rio de Janeiro shows that community identity may be strengthened through appreciation and reinterpretation of the history and construction of local memories. The Maré Museum generates visions 'of ourselves and others' by establishing a more subtle and constant dynamic between identities and their constructed memories and narrated stories in Boaventura de Souza Santos' notion of a counter-hegemonic museum.
