Abstract

John Searles 1990 article Collective intentions and actions is nowa classic text in the burgeoning field within analytic philosophythat would aptly be named the philosophy of social phenomena. Thearticle represents the core of Searles account of social realityor, as he sometimes puts it, social facts, and the foundation ofthe account of institutional facts on which his famous 1995 bookTheConstruction of Social Realityfocuses. The present discussion revisitsthis article and notes some questions it provokes. It focuses onthe first section of Searles article, in which its central ideasare laid out.
