Abstract

The research had as its object of study the Pastoral, a nongovernmental organization that combines the largest volume of voluntary work in Brazil. The volunteer work has grown significantly, playing an important role in society, justifying trace its outlines, especially on the grounds (membership, affiliation, shutdown), expectations and difficulties faced by volunteers. Was used as a research strategy, methodology based on qualitative group interview. The survey was conducted among the population of volunteers of the Pastoral districts of Ponta Negra (South Zone), Gramor (North Zone), Plateau (East) and New Pond (West Zone) in the capital of Rio Grande do Norte. Values of selflessness and affection predominates, featuring the work as a volunteer governed mainly by altruism. The ultimate goal of the volunteers is to promote the welfare of others, community and society, less concerned, therefore, benefits and progress themselves.
