Abstract

identify factors that may influence our understanding and assessment of children's acute reactions to burns and burn therapy, reviewing the available literature on the occurrence of acute [psychosocial] problems and treatment alternatives / describe a strategy for developing prevention interventions with this population / focus on burns occurring in children and adolescents that require hospitalization context of acute reactions to burns [biologic considerations, historical considerations, developmental issues, social support and available resources, treatment setting factors, intervention accessibility and quality] / common acute behavioral/psychological problems [anxiety and depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social adjustment and withdrawal, dietary noncompliance, emotional responses, adaptive coping] / treatment of acute problems [analgesic pain management, self-regulation techniques, behavioral approaches] (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: chapter)
