A prior knowledge of the domain states and composition of the magnetic grains in basalts could be helpful in planning palaeointensity investigations and this could be obtained by simple techniques. The behaviour of basalt samples containing different types of magnetic grains on heating and cooling is presented and the feasibility of estimating palaeointensity from such samples is discussed. -Authors
