Solidwastemanagement has become a challenge for the city authorities in a developing country like India. Increasing urbanization and economic growth leads to increasing generation of waste, and this poses a serious threat to the environment. The survey conducted reviews the present status of waste management in six solid waste management municipalities in Hooghly district, West Bengal. This involves the primary collection and transportation, secondary collection methods followed by disposal and treatment technologies practised. It also attempts to detect the pros and cons of the waste management systems already implemented and puts forward recommendations and suggestions for enhancing the existing management systems.
