Abstract

This chapter gives an overview of the ecology of sand dune ecosystems and their vegetation series in Central Europe, covering the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts as well as inland dune areas. Based on a description of dune formation and destruction processes, the flora and vegetation of the different dune types are presented in detail, followed by chapters on dune plant adaptation to the environment, a thorough discussion of vegetation dynamics, and an assessment of the human influence on dune ecosystems.
