At these sites a new hydraulic piston cover was used to obtain cores of laminated diatomaceous sediments from the oxygen minimum on the continental slope. The core material and its geochemistry, biostratigraphy and physical properties are described. Heat flow measurements are presented and the drilling results are compared with seismic and downhole logging data. The sediment section could not be penetrated sufficiently to study the early evolution of the crust in this region. Logs and core photographs are presented.-B.W.D.Yardley
