Abstract

When approaching a patient for surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRFs), intraoperative success is based on the ability to properly expose the fractures, obtain anatomic fracture reduction, and securely maintain this reduction. Several models for classification of rib fractures have been proposed, with no universal adoption. These authors prefer categorizing fractures as anterior, lateral, or posterior. Anterior fractures are those from the anterior axillary line to the sternum (including the costal cartilages). Lateral fractures are defined by the anterior and posterior axillary lines. Posterior fractures are found between the posterior axillary line and the spine. A thorough preoperative understanding of the fracture pattern will allow for proper positioning and incision planning, which will ultimately lead to success of operative intervention.
