Objective: Review the literature on the benefits of combining periodontal and orthodontic treatments in patients with periodontal involvement. Methods: The descriptors "tooth movement techniques" and "periodontitis", duly registered in the MeSH and connected to each other by the Boolean operator "AND", in the PubMed database were searched. In an initial search, 216 studies were found, among which 54 studies were selected because they were human studies and published in the last 10 years. These, in turn, had their titles and abstracts read thoroughly, including, in sequence, 8 articles consisting of randomized clinical trials (n = 4) and case reports (n = 4) in the English language that investigated the repercussions of orthodontic treatment on periodontalally compromised dental elements. Literature Review: In short, studies show that patients with periodontalally compromised teeth can be treated orthodontically, provided that the movements used in treatment are continuous, light and controlled, and can benefit from insertion gain and improvements in oral hygiene conditions, due to dental alignment. Conclusion: It is of great importance the follow-up of a periodontist, allied to the orthodontist, during the treatment concomitantly, so that the result is achieved in a healthy way and maintained in the long term.
