Abstract

Experiments conducted on a model system of an aqueous solution of NH//4Cl, and the formation processes of channels and the flow pattern in the mushy zone were analyzed. A mathematical model for channel-type segregation is developed on the basis of perturbation theory. Thermal insulation of the side walls is essential for preventing channel-type segregation.
