Diazocarbonyl compounds have long been utilized in the field of transition-metal catalysis, wherein the formation of a metal-carbene complex is involved as a key step. On the other hand, diazocarbonyl compounds can be utilized in acid catalysis owing to their intrinsic property to act as a nucleophile to an acid-activated electrophile. However, in sharp contrast to the metal-carbene chemistry, this research field has not been well developed to date as a means to synthesize complex molecular architectures. In the last several years, we have been interested in the exploration of this untapped research area to provide novel ways to synthesize a variety of complex molecules stereoselectively. © 2013 The Chemical Society of Japan.
