Abstract

Higher education has experienced significant changes from a social perspective. From a relatively enclosed situation, centred in universities, focused on theoretical and conceptual teaching and learning in the arts, sciences and humanities, and in advanced research and scholarship, it has moved to centre stage in most countries, with an increasing focus on preparing its graduates for the labour market. It is offered by different providers, to a large and diversified student population, in a wide range of teaching, research, consultancy and service functions.
