Abstract

An extensive literature search was performed by the Julius Kühn-Institut (JKI), Germany, on potato cyst nematodes (Globodera pallida and G. rostochiensis) and the potato cyst nematode (PCN)-host interaction. The review questions to be answered were as follows: What are the genetic and phenotypic characteristics of PCN species? What is the distribution of PCN species and populations? What is the impact of PCN on crop yield of host plants? What are the available control options in potato/tomato/eggplant? Search terms were identified and search term combinations defined. The following databases were selected for the searches: AGRICOLA (http://agricola.nal.usda.gov), CAB International (http://www.cabdirect.org), ISI Web of Knowledge (http://apps.isiknowledge.com) and SCOPUS (www.scopus.com). There was no language restriction applied to the searches. The years from 1970 until 2011 were covered for this search. All search results for the individual questions were downloaded in the reference managing software EndNote and saved as separate database (relating to the search question). Duplicates from databases were removed using the tool FIND DUPLICATE in the reference managing program EndNote. Duplicates that could not be removed by EndNote were manually removed from the databases. Databases were then imported in a final EndNote database. A bibliography of all abstracts was generated and abstracts of scientific articles were screened against pre-defined criteria. It was found that 729 articles/abstract were relevant to the search questions. Results were summarized in tabular form and a written summary provided. Literature (scientific articles) was provided as requested from EFSA.
