This type of research is qualitative research, using the descriptive approach, which seeks to describe a social phenomenon. In other words, this study aims to describe the nature of something that is taking place at the time of the study. This research uses data collection techniques with in-depth interviews, observation and literature study. The results of this research is there are different cultural patterns between the Batak ethnic students in UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta with the indigenous people of Yogyakarta. The Batak ethnic students in UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta has a Low Context cultural patterns and masculinity, while the indigenous people of Yogyakarta has a High Context cultural patterns and Femininity. Communcation patern that exists between the Batak ethnic students in UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta with the indigenous people of Yogyakarta has entered a stage of dynamic intercultural communication having been through an interactive stage and transactional. Intercultural communication that occurs, namely: the uses of language, perception, nonverbal forms of communication, food and social interaction.
