Abstract

Experience with percutaneous central venous access has endorsed its usefulness and relative safety in the care of critically ill patients. Unfortunately, a variety of minor and major complications are associated with the landmark-guided techniques to central venous catheterization. This review describes the more prevalent techniques to central venous catheterization. This review describes the more prevalent techniques and the anatomy of central venous access and alternative techniques, including ultrasound- guided approaches, is presented.
