Abstract

A new kind of battery control unit (BCU) has been developed for a 160 Wp stand alone PV model plant. This plant uses a lead acid storage battery. The BCU is based on a 8051 microcontroller and includes a DC/DC power converter. The features of the BCU are maximum power point tracking, overcharge and underdischarge protection, real-time simulation of the state of charge and display of all relevant system data. The BCU operates reliably and the accuracy of the simulated state of charge has proven high enough for the practical use of the state of charge indicator.
