Abstract

This commentary challenges views of left populism as the normative desirable path for radical democracy. It disentangles populist diagnosis of the failures and deficits of democracy from its solutions. It argues that the logic of populism so well analyzed by Laclau leads to the appropriation of people’s power by a clique of politicians and ultimately by a leader.
