Abstract

Food intake and digestion were examined in several stonefly species. Food utilization was determined by measuring respired radioactive carbon dioxide. Members of both Nemouroidea and Systellognatha assimilated food. Glucose is more rapidly metabolized than leucin, and the rate of metabolism of Leuctra nigra is higher than Siphonoperla torrentium. The respiration rates of adult Nemurella (4340 μl O2 g-1h-1), Leuctra (4350 μl O2 g-1h-1) and Siphonoperla (2840 μl O2 g-1h-1) were determined.
