Abstract

In this chapter we are going to focus on analysing sustainability within the ambit of academic tourism. This is a highly specific type of tourism which has become significantly more popular over recent decades and is characterised by certain well-defined features. In order to better carry out this study, we first offer an analysis of the relationship between sustainability and tourism in general. This will provide a backdrop against which to focus upon academic tourism and to set out the empirical evidence which has become available up to the present date. This evidence will help to define and set up an empirical procedure that will allow us to evaluate levels of sustainability in academic tourism. The chapter concludes by setting out proposals aimed at improving these levels of sustainability.
