Black rice (Oryza sativa L. indica) contains flavonoid compounds which have antioxidant activity that can be used as sunscreen. Antioxidants can overcome the effects of major damage to human skin caused by free radicals which are a major factor in the aging process and skin tissue damage. This study purpose to extraction and determine the SPF value produced by black rice extract. This research was done by extracting black rice with a remaceration method using 96% ethanol, and the SPF value of the extract was tested using UV-VIS spectrophotometry. The results of organoleptic extrac was viscous extract form, purplish black color, the disthinctive smell of rice flour and bitter taste. The results of value determination of black rice extract at a concentration of 500 ppm, 600 ppm, 700 ppm, 800 ppm and 900 ppm were 8.02 ± 0.015 respectively; 10.22 ± 0.024; 13.43 ± 0.01; 17.57 ± 0.01; 20.50 ± 0.015. Based on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the SPF value is included in the moderate protection category because it has an SPF value between 12-30. Black rice extract has potential as a sunblock.
