This paper presents the design of a kit, called Measuring Breathing Rate Kit or MBR Kit, to measure respiratory rate by using a low-cost ultrasonic sensor. The ultrasonic sensor SRF05 is used as the main sensing element. The sensor provides the measurement of the distance to the closest object. Based on the data of the continuous changes of the distance between the sensor and the human chest, breathing rate is determined and displayed on a Liquid-crystal display. This kit is very useful in monitoring the patients in hospital or at home. The breathing rate from the kit shows how healthy a patient is and from that the doctor can take the appropriate treatment on the patient. The current Kit is designed to be used as a standalone device. In the future, the Kit is to be set up with Internet of Thing for telehealth applications.
