In this contribution, the economic development of the Black Country is linked to the specific geographical and geological features of the region. The research is rooted in the idea that regional economic growth depends on the specific character of the space in which it occurs. The composition of the space, like the availability of natural resources or waterways and streams, can trigger or hinder economic development. Therefore the space of development has to be methodologically treated as a variable in the analysis of economic development.
