Abstract

Lean Healthcare is a focused management methodology on patient and cooperation among its participants that seeks continuous improvement to eliminate waste thus adding more value to hospital processes. Considering the variety of this philosophy application opportunities, taking into account that the Lean Healthcare has been implemented recently, this research seeks to analyze the discharge process in a maternity ward of a large hospital in order to increase the availability of bed admission, as this sector frequently presents a crowded table. Through field observations and diagnosis of the current situation, the main losses encountered in the discharge process were analyzed. Wastes found were classified according to the seven losses of Lean production and the impact they have on the value of the patient. Then, countermeasure actions were proposed. These actions focus on the fact that medical discharges occur in batches, and so an accumulation of tasks in the following activities take place, which increases the reoccupation time of the released beds.
