In the first three chapters a historical survey has been given of developments in Indonesia since 1945 and the role of Islam as a constituent of contemporary political life in Indonesia. Against this background a preliminary stocktaking can be made of the most important activities and problems of the Islamic community in present-day Indonesia. This means that we shall be dealing with those activities and problems which nowadays are topics of discussion among Indonesian Muslims and in Muslim publications. Reflecting on those activities and problems, we may then be able to perceive some characteristic tendencies of Islam in modern Indonesia.
