A Critical Appraisal of Research Interviews as a Qualitative Method of Data Generation in Study Abroad Research

Abstract

Qualitative research conducted in applied linguistics, including in study abroad research (SAR), has many times relied on the use of research interviews (RIs). Recent epistemological shifts in the field have led to calls for a critical review of RIs as a method of data generation. In this chapter, we appraise the use of RIs in SAR, developing a picture of the RI as a qualitative method, and identifying and honing in on dilemmas that emerge in SAR contexts specifically. We also offer epistemological, methodological, and practical considerations that affect the implementation of RIs in SA contexts, including researcher reflexivity and negotiation of identity during data collection and analysis. We end with a reevaluation of the dilemmas facing SA scholars and offer novel insights and practical steps for those including RIs in their SAR design.
