Abstract

The chapter gives an overview of the field of diplomatic relations. It presents the evolution and functions of diplomatic missions before discussing the composition of the members of the diplomatic mission, State representatives abroad, and the administrative staff along with their appointment procedure, functions, and immunities. Consular relations are also described as a fundamental element of contemporary diplomatic relations. The contribution also describes the legal regime devised in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 for the normal conduction of diplomatic relations between States and the principal differences with the immunities of international organisations.
