The paper is based on photos taken by Mariner II in 1972 and by Viking II which landed on Mars 1976-83, and includes 17 black and white plates of the Martian surface. Volcanic features show certain similarities with those on Earth but in general, the immense size of the Martian landforms suggest that there are fundamental differences in erosional processes or relatively litle erosion on Mars. Analogies with features in the Arabian Desert suggest the importance of aeolian erosion on Mars. -B.Fullerton
