A full deep discharge event for the Anchorage Municipal Light & Power (AML&P) SMES magnet will dissipate 4,150 kJ into the magnet’s helium bath in 60 s. Resulting bath pressures and liquid levels will exceed those that permit normal magnet operations. The helium refrigeration system (HRS) must stabilize bath conditions to permit normal operations within 24 h of event initiation. A 4-stage deep discharge recovery approach is outlined, and models developed for each stage are discussed. Model predictions of the HRS response are presented.
