Abstract

The term basal ganglia refers to a group of closely connected cell masses forming a continuum extending from the basis of the telencephalon, via the central part of the diencephalon, into the tegmentum of the mesencephalon. This complex classically encompasses the striatum (the nucleus caudatus and the putamen), the globus pallidus, the subthalamic nucleus and the substantia nigra.
