Physical cash is vulnerable to rising threats, such as large-scale, government-mandated forgeries, that digital cash may protect against more effectively. We discuss initial mechanisms and examine their cost and benefit trade-offs. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
