Abstract

A series of water-sol. polymers were prepd. by reacting α- and β-cyclodextrin with epichlorohydrin in NaOH solns. Depending on the exptl. conditions, polymers having very high mol. wt. avs. (Mw > 106 g.mol-1) can be obtained. However, low Mw fractions (Mw < 10000) were always present. The substitution patterns were detd. by 13C NMR anal. and std. methylation anal. of polysaccharides. The formation of side chains and bridges consisting of sequences of poly(2-hydroxypropyl)ether units were demonstrated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and gas liq. chromatog. - mass spectrometry. The predominant position of substitution depends on the NaOH concn. [on SciFinder(R)]
