Abstract

X-ray observations of afterglows are providing new insights on the nature of the central source of GRB. In this review I will focus on observations of temporal and spectral features, particularly on iron lines by BeppoSAX & Chandra and discuss how these observations can disclose the origin of the progenitors of GRB. I briefly review the old and new mysteries opened by recent observations and discuss observational prospects and future perspectives of GRB science.
